Penn State and the Grand Experiment

I got this response from Dave Whitley AOL sportswriter today in response to my angy note to him last night--thought I would share it:

I’m all for Penn State’s grand experiment. I wish every school tried to emulate what Paterno did in regards to academic performance.
As to whether the school’s performance regarding Sandusky has permanently damaged its reputation, I’m not sure if there’s any eviden...ce I could present that would persuade you it has. I don’t know anyone who’d argue this hasn’t infiltrated the national consciousness beyond any sports-related scandal. The few others in that realm – Black Sox of 1919, baseball steroids, college basketball point-shaving in the 1940s, Olympic bribery – certainly left a taint.

My Post Script: this is a crime alleged against one person--the media has made it much more, and destroyed a lot of innocent people in the process. The media (of which Dave Whitley portends to be a part) has tainted the public perception of a decent honorable institution and community. The Board of Trustees, in their knee-jerk reaction, multiplied the damage. This is not systemic criminal behavior such as the scandals he alludes to in his response. Pass this along and offer your comments
